Farewell, love

It kills me to write this, but we lost our darling Georgie today. She was 14. She began failing last Thursday, the day before we were to start our drive to California. Her back legs failed, and then she couldn't move. It's as if she saw the suitcases and made a decision that it was all too much.
There is a huge hole in our hearts. Georgie was a tough and complicated little dog whom we rescued from Georgia at age 3. Hence the name. She was serious, guarded, and fierce. Slaughtered many baby geese and one woodchuck. Very fast at thievery! She was incredibly committed to getting what she needed: Fritos, comfy chairs, raspberry pies, coffee, Roxie's kibble, sandwich fixings, walkies, clearing the streets of passersby... and then she'd turn around and melt all over you. Honestly, I don't know how we'll watch a movie ever again without her draped across our laps.
Tomorrow we have to drive cross country without her.
